After her husband’s death, there was some disagreement with the rest of the family over various issues including property. At one stage, Abedita Chowdhury (Ankhi) moved from Habiganj to Sunamganj with her only daughter Prothma Chowdhury. She lived in a rented house in the city. The daughter was studying in the city’s Sunamganj Girls’ High School, in the eighth grade. Ankhi Chowdhury had all her dreams about her daughter. She lived by relying on her. But everything came to an end in an accident. This Friday morning, the lives of the mother and daughter were lost on the road.
According to family sources, Abedita Chowdhury’s (40) father’s house is in Shalla upazila of Sunamganj. She got married to Pranoy Das, a resident of Nazirpur village of Nabiganj upazila of Habiganj. Her husband died of a heart attack eight years ago.
This morning, Abedita was going to her in-laws’ house in Habiganj with her daughter ahead of Durga Puja. The autorickshaw carrying them met with an accident in the Pagla area of Shantiganj upazila on the Sunamganj-Sylhet road. The autorickshaw was hit by a truck coming from the opposite direction and twisted. Abedita Chowdhury, her daughter Prothma Chowdhury and autorickshaw driver Sajal Ghosh (50) died on the spot.
Abedita Chowdhury’s relative Pabitra Das said that a family has ended on the road. Abedita Chowdhury had all her dreams about her daughter.
Sunamganj District Mahila Parishad President Gauri Bhattacharya said that Abedita Chowdhury used to regularly attend the weekly reading sessions of the Mahila Parishad with her daughter. After her husband died, she did not even think about her daughter. She said that the reckless truck instantly took the lives of three people, including a mother and daughter. In fact, no one thinks about road safety, which is why deaths on the road are increasing. Every family is ending.
At least eight people have died in several road accidents on the same road recently. Earlier, on September 13, a motorcycle collided with a private car in the Joykals area of Shantiganj upazila on the Sunamganj-Sylhet road, killing Suhel Mia (38) and Sabdar Ali (37), the district administration’s official.
On September 6, in the Bahadurpur area of Sadar upazila, a head-on collision between an auto-rickshaw and a passenger bus killed Sneha Chakraborty, a student of the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department of Sunamganj University of Science and Technology, Afsana Khushi, a second-year student of Sunamganj Textile Institute, and businessman Shafiqul Islam (70). They were returning to Sunamganj district town from Shantiganj in an auto-rickshaw.
Former president of the Sunamganj District Bar Association, Rabiul Leis, expressed his anger and said, “In a few days, within a few kilometers of this road, eight people, including two university students and district administration employees, have died in accidents. We talk in various forums about stopping the movement of auto-rickshaws and easy bikes on the highway. But those responsible do not listen. “That is why road deaths are increasing. Auto-rickshaws and easy bikes should be stopped on the highway immediately.”
