OpenAI has announced the introduction of new age restrictions for ChatGPT users. ChatGPT will change the way it responds to users under 18 by identifying them.

This decision comes after a recent lawsuit was filed in the United States over the suicide of a 16-year-old teenager.

The family alleged that the teenager decided to commit suicide after talking to ChatGPT for months. It is alleged that the AI even gave him guidance on how to commit suicide and even helped him write a letter.

In this regard, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a blog post, “Teenagers need important protection. That’s why we prioritize safety over privacy.”

The new policy that OpenAI has decided on

1. Sexually graphic content will be completely blocked for users under 18.
2. ChatGPT will not discuss flirting or suicide in any way.
3. If someone indicates suicide, the guardian or emergency authorities will be notified.
4. New technology will be used to estimate age, if in doubt, the user will be considered under 18. In some cases, age verification may also be required with ID.

Altman added, “We will treat adults as adults. They can have flirtatious conversations if they want. However, suicide instructions will not be given in any way, only for the purpose of writing stories or creative writing.”

OpenAI said that their system can sometimes break down due to the exchange of thousands of messages over a long period of time. For this reason, stronger security measures are being added.
