On the night of March 13, 2020, a mobile court of the district administration conducted a raid on the house of journalist Ariful Islam. He was blindfolded and tortured for publishing news about the naming of a pond and various irregularities in the administration, and there were allegations of being threatened with death in a ‘gunfight’ and taken to the Deputy Commissioner’s office and physically tortured. Later, Ariful was immediately sentenced to one year in prison on charges of possessing half a bottle of liquor and 150 grams of marijuana. It was alleged that in addition to the Deputy Commissioner, the then RDC Nazim Uddin, NDC Rahatul Islam and Executive Magistrate Rintu Bikash Chakma were involved in this incident.
The administration faced widespread criticism after the incident. Ariful Islam was later released on bail. After his release, journalist Ariful filed a case in the District and Sessions Judge Court. The case has been going on for five years. Recently, the accused former Deputy Commissioner Sultana Parveen got bail from the High Court. She appeared in court today for permanent bail.
Defendant’s lawyer Fakhrul Islam told Prothom Alo that when former Deputy Commissioner Sultana Parveen came to the court to seek bail, the court rejected her bail.
